Starting your journey as a memory keeper

What Smritis is, how a Dig works, and how to take the first step.

What is Smritis?

Smritis is a memory studio in Kolkata, with an online studio and the Dig companion app. It helps you save the memories that matter before they fade.

You talk a memory through, a quiet Dig Coach asks the questions, and what surfaces is kept as Engrams. Smritis doesn’t generate stories or simulate people: everything comes from what you remember, in your own voice.

What kinds of memories can I save?

Any memory that matters to you: family memories, stories of your grandmother or grandfather, college and hostel days, the workplace and the boss you never forgot, trips and first solo travel, retreats and altered states, dreams, first love, someone you have lost, your own life story. What to dig? has them all.

Is a Dig like journalling?

It leaves you with the same thing: your memories, in writing, to read again. But there is no blank page. You talk, and your Dig Coach asks the questions.

What is a Dig?

A Dig is a guided exploration of your mind. We take small, unexpected routes into your memory and follow wherever they lead.

You can dig online on the Web App, or in person at our studio in Kolkata. You walk away with your Engrams.

What is an Engram?

An Engram is a memory in its smallest whole form: a byte-sized nugget with the words, the photographs and the voice note that belong to it. A single Dig surfaces many. Each one can be kept, added to, and passed on.

What are the six kinds of dig?

Available now on the Web App: the Guided and Life digs. Dig with assistance from our Coach and turn your memories into stories.

Coming soon, exclusively on the mobile app: the Quick, Group and Invited digs.

Coming soon: the Secret dig.

Which dig should I start with?

With a Guided dig: it is available now on the Web App. Dig with assistance from our Coach and turn your memories into stories.

Not sure what to dig? On What to dig?, pick from 13 kinds of memory and 56 moments, from a dream on waking to a life in chapters.

What happens after a Dig?

Four steps. Dig: you talk, the coach listens and asks. Discover: you read back your Engrams, correct names, add photos and voice notes. Storify: the story coach finds the gaps, asks a few questions, and shapes your story script.

Produce: if you want, a human director shapes your chosen memories into a story, in writing, audio, film, a live telling or something else. Or you simply keep what you found.

Do I have to finish in one sitting?

No. Take your break. Your dig is saved, and when you come back, we pick up right where you left off, with a short reminder of where you were. You do not need to conclude it.

What do I need?

A laptop, headphones and a quiet place. The headphones keep the coach’s voice out of your recording.

A dig with a human coach is available only in the studio for now. Online, over video with the Memory Dig Kit, it is coming soon.

How do I begin?

Make your free Smritis account and confirm your email. Then book your first Dig for ₹99, and the studio is yours for 30 days.

One account works for the website, the Smritis Memory StudioTM (online) and the Dig companion app.

What does it cost?

₹99 books your first Dig. After that, ₹499 a month to use the studio (subject to usage limits); your ₹99 counts towards the first month.

Books, films, keepsakes and studio sessions are quoted on request. Production costs are extra.

Your family

Your elderly parents, family and friends

Record the stories of the people you love.

Can I record my parents’ or grandparents’ stories?

Yes. You’ve heard pieces of their story all your life, but never the whole of it. Give them a Dig: we ask the questions you never got round to asking, and help them remember.

They only need to talk. You can set it up for them at home or bring them to our studio in Kolkata. The Memory Dig Kit over video is coming soon.

What can we make together?

A written portrait, a small book, an audio story, a short film of a life or a time, a live telling for the family, or a reading at a Story Slam. Many families dig around an anniversary, a big birthday, a festival, a wedding, or before a family home is sold.

Can I keep the voice of someone who has passed?

Yes, gently and in your own time. Open a dig in their name, and record the things they used to say. If you want, a counsellor talks with you first.

Secret and sealed

Your own secret memories, recorded and sealed

For what has never been said: dig it, keep it, and seal it with a passcode only you know.

What does sealing a dig mean?

Any saved dig can be sealed in a bottle with a passcode only you know. The passcode is shown to you once. The bottle’s label shows its number, its date and the first four characters of the passcode.

To open it, you type the last four characters. Opened, you can keep digging, storify and share as usual, and it stays sealed.

Can anyone at Smritis open a sealed dig?

A sealed dig opens in the app only with your passcode. We keep only a scrambled form of your passcode, never the passcode itself. The Secret dig, for what nobody else may ever open, is coming soon.

What if I lose the passcode?

Then the dig stays sealed. Because we never keep the passcode, we cannot recover it for you. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe.

What kinds of memories do people keep sealed?

Dreams caught on waking, what changed on a retreat, the whole story of a breakup while it is still honest, the last conversation with someone, and letters to open later.

Can I save the memory of a retreat or an altered state?

Yes. Talk it through soon after, while it is fresh: a plant-medicine or psychedelic retreat, breathwork, a silent retreat, a dream. You can seal the dig with a passcode, so that it stays yours. A Dig is for reflection, not therapy or medical advice.

Is a Dig therapy?

No. Smritis is for reflection, not therapy. Some memories are hard to go back to alone: ask for a Guided Dig with a counsellor, who talks with you first. In distress? Call Tele-MANAS on 14416, free, day and night.

Security and privacy

How we keep your memories safe

Your memories are yours. Here is who can see what, and why.

Who can see my digs?

Only you. Your digs belong to your account. A sealed dig opens only with your passcode.

Is the Dig Coach an AI? Does it keep what I say?

The Dig Coach uses AI to listen and to ask the next question. It does not write your memories for you: your Engrams and your story come from what you said.

We use AI services on terms that do not let them keep what you say or learn from it.

Where are my recordings kept?

On Smritis’s own servers in India, under your account.

Will Smritis use my story?

Only if you agree. When you make your account, you can tick “If my stories are worth producing, share them with the Smritis production team”. Even then, we ask you before anything is made.

How do I share a story?

By a private link, which you make when you choose to share. Anyone with the link can read the story without signing in. Stop sharing, and the link no longer opens it.

Why do I need headphones?

So the coach’s voice never enters your microphone. The microphone listens only when it is your turn to speak.

How are payments made?

Only on smritis.in, under Your account, through Razorpay: cards, UPI, net banking and wallets. The online studio and the Dig companion app never take payments.

Material memories

Things to hold, made by our Artists Collective

Some memories want to be touched. Our artists turn the things you’ve kept into art, by hand.

What are material memories?

Art made by hand from the things you’ve kept, to hang on your wall or hold in your lap.

A quilt of your mother’s sarees. A jewellery box from your grandmother’s tin soap box. An old pen, framed. Your father’s letters, bound into a book. Your grandfather’s watch, set into a wall piece.

How does a piece come to life?

You bring the story: your Engrams, and the object, cloth or keepsake that holds the memory. We match the maker: your director and an artist from the collective read your story together. The artist makes it, by hand, in conversation with you. It comes home, finished, signed, and credited to the hands behind it.

Who are the artists?

Designers and illustrators, editors, sound artists and filmmakers, mixed media artists, makers of textiles and curios, writers, typographers, bookbinders and photographers. Every piece is handcrafted, with the artist credited.

What does a piece cost?

Each piece is quoted on request, once we know the story and the material. Production costs are extra to your Dig.

I’m an artist. Can I join the collective?

Yes. You don’t need to have worked with memory before. What matters is that your work carries feeling, that you listen closely, and that you care about the story behind the thing you’re making. Apply on the Collective page.
